The basic objective of BPL survey is to identify the families living below the poverty line which could be assisted under various anti poverty programmes. The survey is got conducted by the District Rural Development Agencies in the rural areas after every Five Year Plan strictly in accordance with the guidelines/format prescribed by the Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India.
The last survey in the State was conducted during the year 1997-98. As per this survey, 6.39 lacs families (30.35%) out of total 21.05 lacs families were BPL.
For the 9th Five Year Plan, a rural family having per month per-capita expenditure upto Rs.289.31 Paise was considered to be living below the poverty line in the State.
